How your payment day is decided
- SSI is paid on the 1st of the month.
- If you started Social Security before May 1997, or you get both Social Security and SSI, you are paid on the 3rd.
- Everyone else is paid on a Wednesday based on their birthday: 1st–10th → second Wednesday, 11th–20th → third Wednesday, 21st–31st → fourth Wednesday.
- If the day falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment comes on the business day before.
Why did I get two SSI payments in one month?
When the 1st of next month is a weekend or holiday, next month's SSI arrives at the end of this month. It is not an extra payment — it is next month's money arriving early, so budget for it.
My payment didn't arrive
Banks can take until the end of the payday to post a deposit. If it still hasn't arrived after three business days, contact Social Security or check your my Social Security account at ssa.gov.
