She had not, as an adult, attempted very hard to find her birth mother — partly out of loyalty to her adoptive parents, partly out of a careful instinct that she did not want to disrupt a stranger's life uninvited. She had, however, kept the name Mariana in a small notebook on her bedside table for thirty-one years.

She had submitted her DNA to one of the commercial ancestry services in 2019. She had received many distant matches over the years. None of them, by chance or by the strange luck of the genealogical algorithms, had ever been close enough to lead her to her birth family.

Daniel told her, on the phone that afternoon, about the maternity home, the parish priest, the closed adoption, the diocesan archive flood, the two search firms, the forty-seven distant DNA matches, the eighty-six forum replies, and the fact that his mother had died eighteen days after the conversation in which she had finally told him that he had a sister.

Marian listened to all of this. She did not interrupt once.

When Daniel was finished, she said, in the very small voice of a woman who had been carrying a single sentence in her chest for several decades: "What was she like?"
